The Finocchiaro CLP Government is delivering targeted, practical programs to help break the cycle of youth offending through the rollout of the latest Youth Boot Camp.
Held in Darwin from 9-11 August, the camp featured community reparation and conservation work with local enterprise Kulture Cuts, a team resilience day at Litchfield National Park, and vocational employment skills workshops at YouthWorX NT.
Minister for Corrections Gerard Maley said the intensive three-day program is a vital part of the Territory's broader strategy to support rehabilitation and reduce youth offending, delivering on the CLP's commitment to a year of action, certainty and security.
"We know that detention alone won't change behaviour, that's why these boot camps hold youths to account and give them the skills and responsibility to try and break the cycle of reoffending. It's about giving young people the tools and discipline to choose a better path," Minister Maley said.
"Far from a soft option, the boot camps focus on learning, teamwork, and developing practical skills that can help youths turn their lives around."
"Over the weekend, participants worked alongside local organisations, took part in physical challenges, and explored real vocational pathways, all while building resilience and respect for themselves and their community."
The Darwin camp included:
Community reparation and conservation work with local enterprise Kulture Cuts;A physical challenge and team resilience day at Litchfield National Park; andVocational workshops at YouthWorX NT, providing hands-on experience in trades and employment options.
Minister Maley said the program's structure, combining community service, outdoor challenges and career exploration, is designed to address the underlying drivers of offending while equipping youths with the tools to make positive choices.
"The Youth Boot Camp program is about more than just time in detention. It's about holding youths accountable, building their confidence and changing their behaviour to ultimately contribute to a safer Northern Territory," he said.
The Youth Boot Camp program will continue to run across the Territory, working with local organisations, elders and youth justice staff to deliver targeted, culturally responsive rehabilitation opportunities.
