Co-designing First Nations Enduring Water Holding Model

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

First Nations Peoples hold rights to about 40% of Australian land through Native Title. But they own less than 0.2% of the Murray-Darling Basin's surface water entitlements.

The Australian Government is committed to reversing water dispossession among First Nations Peoples.

We're working with Basin First Nations Peoples and an independent First Nations-led consultancy to co-design a governance model.

This will allow Basin First Nations People to own and manage water purchased through the $100 million Aboriginal Water Entitlements Program.

In the first round of co-design, we worked with Basin First Nations Peoples on what matters most in First Nations-led water governance.

Now, we're returning for a second round of engagement to test and refine the proposed models. Your knowledge, experience, and ideas are key to shaping a model that is First Nations-led.

The consultation is open to all Basin First Nations Peoples until 21 December 2025.

Don't miss this opportunity to shape how water is owned, managed, and governed for all Basin First Nations for generations to come.
