Cohuna Aged Care Facility Construction Advances

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is one step closer to delivering the high-quality aged care locals in Cohuna and the greater Gunbower region deserve, with construction on the new $41.1 million aged care facility reaching a major milestone.

Minister for Ageing Ingrid Stitt today announced that major structural works are now complete on the new Public Sector Residential Aged Care (PSRAC) facility - with the internal fit-out now progressing alongside the building's façade.

Once complete, it will feature 16 aged care beds arranged in two 'small households' - each designed to promote dignity, privacy and independence through modern single rooms with private ensuite bathrooms.

The facility will include eight acute care hospital beds and a refurbished administrative space to strengthen communication between staff and families.

Residents will also enjoy dedicated communal kitchens, dining and lounge areas, as well as quiet sitting spaces to connect with loved ones and fellow residents.

The state-of-the-art facility will be co-located with and operated by Cohuna District Hospital, ensuring residents can access both aged care and short-term acute medical support close to home.

Innovative building methods, including a robotic set-out machine that 'prints' building plans directly onto the slab, have also been used to improve speed and accuracy.

So far, more than 150 workers have contributed to the project, with strong local involvement - and, where possible, materials and services sourced locally to boost jobs and support the regional economy.

Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority, builder Fairbrother Construction is constructing the new and modern facility that is expected to be completed in early 2027.

As stated by Minister for Ageing Ingrid Stitt

"For older Victorians especially in regional areas, being able to age in place - surrounded by familiar faces and loved ones - makes all the difference and we're delivering the facilities and care to make that happen."

As stated by Minister for Health Infrastructure Melissa Horne

"We're delivering modern, purpose-built public aged care facilities in communities right across the state - and this new facility in Cohuna will give older Victorians the safe, tailored care they need, close to home."

As stated by Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes

"This new facility is creating local jobs during construction and will give older people in Cohuna and the greater Gunbower region the comfort, dignity and care they deserve."
