The Planning and Development Committee has recommended approval for a Material Change of Use application for a development at Rasmussen that will include short-term medical accommodation, residential units and a medical centre.
The Yumba-Meta Housing Association plans to build a residential care facility, 32 residential units, a coffee shop, a medical centre and an educational space.
Planning and Development Committee Chair Deputy Mayor Les Walker said the project will help address a growing need in the community.
"Short-term medical accommodation is hard to find when people who need more care are discharged from hospital" Cr Walker said.
"This 27 bed 'stepdown' facility will have two and three bedroom units and dormitory rooms."
Cr Walker said the development will have ongoing benefits.
"This kind of facility can reduce the load on the hospital system by decreasing recovery time in wards," Cr Walker said.
Division 4 Councillor, Mark Molachino said the mixed-use development will benefit the local community.
"Rasmussen residents will have access to a new coffee shop and medical centre," Cr Molachino said.
"The eastern part of the property will include education and office space for the Yumba-Meta Association."
The Committee has approved a Material Change of Use (MCU) for the Rasmussen site, however further approvals are required before the development can proceed.
