A trial of our state-wide common ticketing system is underway on the Derwent Ferry service.
River commuters will now be able to pay for ferry transport with a bank card or smart device, rather than cash or a card that needs to be pre-loaded with money.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said this will provide an advanced, flexible and secure public transport ticketing system.
"Trials are going ahead on the Derwent Ferry, treating commuters to this new system while it's tested on a contained public transport route," Minister Vincent said.
"By offering more payment flexibility, it makes it even easier to catch public transport.
"Tasmania's public transport network has real time tracking, smart journey planning and now common ticketing to complement the other initiatives.
"As we undertake this initial ferry trial, another specific field trial for bus services will begin in early 2026."
