Community And Connection

RAAF

The township of Cooktown, far North Queensland, came together in a tribute to Australia's servicemen and women on Anzac Day, with a special focus on the enduring relationship between the local community and RAAF 35 Squadron.

On April 24, 35 Squadron personnel visited Endeavour Christian College and Cooktown State School.

During these sessions, Flight Lieutenant Hayden Krammer, of 35 Squadron, spoke about the values of the ADF and the importance of community support for Defence families.

"Speaking with the students was about more than reading a speech, it was about building connections, understanding and appreciation," Flight Lieutenant Krammer said.

"The sacrifices made, not just in the past, but now and into the future by those serving and their families are something that everyone can relate to."

The squadron also conducted a static display of a C-27J Spartan aircraft at Cooktown aerodrome, supported by RSL Cooktown. This was a popular attraction for the local community and was a great opportunity to continue to build Defence's relationship within the community.

Anzac Day began at 6.00am with a dawn service at the waterfront, offering a solemn space for remembrance as the sun rose over Cooktown.

'The relationship between RSL Cooktown, 35 Squadron and the wider community is built on trust, respect and shared history.'

At 10.30am, an aircraft from 35 Squadron performed a ceremonial flypast - an enduring tradition that honours those who have served. At the same time, the town march proceeded through the streets, bringing together veterans, school children and current ADF personnel. The day culminated in the main service at 11.00am in Anzac Park, with wreath laying and reflections.

Flight Lieutenant Krammer expressed his pride in returning to a community with such strong ties to the squadron.

"Cooktown holds a special place in 35 Squadron's history, and it was a privilege for us to be involved in these commemorations," he said.

"Anzac Day is a time for reflection - for our members, it's about honouring those who came before us and reaffirming our role in continuing their legacy of service."

The collaboration between 35 Squadron and the RSL Cooktown Sub Branch played a vital role in coordinating this year's events.

James Fay, of RSL Cooktown, said Anzac Day brought everyone together like no other occasion.

"The relationship between RSL Cooktown, 35 Squadron and the wider community is built on trust, respect and shared history. That spirit of mateship is what we celebrated and remembered," Mr Fay said.

As the bugle calls echoed through the town and the Last Post sounded, Cooktown once again stood united with 35 Squadron in remembrance - Lest we forget.
