Community organisations in Colac Otway Shire can put their names forward to host the shire's Australia Day celebrations next year.

Council is seeking expressions of interest from community groups, service clubs, businesses or not-for-profits to host an inclusive, family-friendly community event on Australia Day 2026.

The celebration would include community activities alongside Council-managed official proceedings including a Citizenship Ceremony and Community Achievement Awards.

The event will aim to:

  • Celebrate community spirit and shared values.
  • Provide a warm welcome to new citizens and their families.
  • Offer inclusive, low-cost entertainment and activities.
  • Be accessible, culturally respectful, and welcoming to all.

Groups from anywhere in Colac Otway Shire can apply. The hosts will be responsible for planning, promoting and delivering the community elements of the event.

Community elements could include a barbecue, markets, live music, traditional games, children's activities and more.

Council will centrally manage the civic components of the event, including staging, sound equipment and will co-ordinate the formal proceedings.

Council will provide potential financial support for community activities, assessed based on the strength, scope, and community benefit demonstrated in the proposal.

Expressions of Interest close Monday 11 August.

Mayor Jason Schram said a community-led event for Australia Day would bring people together to celebrate a shared love for Australia's rich culture.

"This is a great opportunity for some of our amazing community groups to help honour our nation's heritage and values, while promoting their own groups and towns.

"Hosting Australia Day will allow communities to showcase their traditions, talents and history, fostering pride in our local heritage while building the profile of the host town or group.

"Events like Australia Day can support local businesses by attracting visitors who spend money on food and other local products.

"I'm excited to see some of the great ideas from our community on how to celebrate Australia Day as a whole shire," Cr Schram said.
