Consultation is now open for the community to have its say on the draft Aquatic Strategy Review and Action Plan 2025-30.
The strategy includes a review of the current aquatic provision in Hobsons Bay, as well as a five-year plan of suggested actions.
The draft action plan includes new priorities, which are proposed to replace the 2019-2030 strategy priorities, and considers changes since that document was endorsed six years ago.
The updated five-year plan outlines key works to ensure the ongoing usability of Hobsons Bay's existing aquatic facilities.
Included is a proposed five-stage redevelopment of Bayfit Leisure Centre in Altona North, incorporating waterplay features, a new and expanded gym, new warm water pool and updated changerooms.
At the newly upgraded Laverton Swim and Fitness Centre, a maintenance plan will be prioritised to preserve the recent renovations, and there will be consideration of unused building spaces to inform future planning.
The 2019 strategy endorsed advocating to the state and federal governments for funding for a new Western Aquatic and Early Years Centre in Altona Meadows.
Since then, the cost for that project has increased from $60 million to almost $100 million. Council has only received a $10 million funding commitment from the state government. In April, Council voted to pause advocacy on this project while the aquatic strategy was being reviewed.
The updated strategy recommends monitoring use of the redeveloped Laverton Swim and Fitness Centre then reassessing aquatic service provision in the west when developing a new Aquatic Strategy in five years.
