The ACT Government wants feedback on the draft Youth Justice Strategic Plan 2026-2031, with public consultation now open through YourSay ACT.
When you provide young people with the right support, they become less likely to engage in criminal behaviour.
The draft Strategic Plan sets out a five-year roadmap for a therapeutic youth justice system that is focused on supporting young people to contribute positively to the community.
It is a plan to help young people who are at risk of entering, or are already involved in, the youth justice system.
It's a plan to reduce reoffending, help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people so they don't get caught up in the justice system, and prevent the next generation of young people from entering the justice system in the first place.
It's a plan to make the community safer.
ACT Minister for Children, Youth and Families Michael Pettersson said community input would play an important role in shaping the final strategy.
"Canberra is one of the safest cities in the country, and we plan to keep it that way." Minister Pettersson said.
"Canberrans want young people to be held accountable for harmful behaviour, but they also want approaches that reduce reoffending and help young people build better futures.
"We want to hear from people who have had real experiences. That could mean you're a young person, a parent, a teacher, a service provider or just a member of the community with experience of the youth justice system.
"Your feedback will help ensure the final plan comprehensively addresses youth justice issues in our community."
The draft Strategic Plan is built around six focus areas:
- Earlier support for children, young people and families
- Diverting young people from the justice system
- Promoting equity, reducing discrimination and addressing over-representation
- Using therapeutic, trauma-informed and healing approaches
- Respecting and protecting young people's rights
- Supporting successful transitions back into the community
Minister Pettersson said it is important the community has confidence in our youth justice system.
"Good policy is built through listening. This is your chance to help shape a youth justice system that supports young people, gives families a better life and builds a safer community for everyone," he said.
Consultation is open until 11 August 2026.
