The City of Darwin is offering rebates of up to $100 on locally purchased compost bins.
Home composting reduces landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
Residents can claim the rebate by purchasing a compost bin from a Northern Territory supplier and submitting an online application with proof of Darwin residency and receipt.
In 2026, City of Darwin is encouraging residents to make a simple change that can have a big environmental impact. For the average household, over one third of the weight of general waste that goes to landfill consists of food scraps and food waste.
To tackle this, City of Darwin is offering a rebate of up to $100 on compost bins, encouraging households to turn food scraps into nutrient-rich compost for their gardens, while reducing landfill waste and harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
The rebate supports City of Darwin's Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030, which aims to cut waste going to landfill and strengthen local recycling efforts. According to the Australian Government's Great Unwaste campaign, the average household throws away 265kg of food each year. If 100 more Darwin households compost at home, that would divert 26.5 tonnes of food waste away from landfill.
Acting Lord Mayor Patrik Ralph said that food waste was among the largest and most preventable contributors to landfill in Darwin.
"Home composting is a simple way for households to reduce waste and emissions while turning food scraps into valuable compost for gardens and green spaces," Mr Ralph said.
"This rebate is one of many simple steps we can take towards our goal of reducing landfill waste and building a cleaner, more sustainable city."
Residents can help reduce household food waste by planning meals, storing food wisely, using leftovers, and composting any scraps that can't be eaten, he said.
To claim the rebate, residents must purchase a home compost bin from a Northern Territory business or supplier, retain the receipt and complete the online form. Each household is eligible for one rebate. Proof of Darwin residency is required. Rebates are limited, so get in quick!
