Compulsory local government voting not a priority

Once again, Labor wants to tell people what to do and how to behave – just as they did throughout the state election campaign.

It’s clear that Labor are only pushing compulsory voting because they think it will benefit them.

And once again, Labor are in lockstep with the Greens in calling for compulsory local government voting. Both Labor and the Greens know the likely effect would be an erosion of independent voices in local government.

The Local Government Association of Tasmania has had its say on the latest thought bubble from Labor, not once, but five times – it has never been carried by LGAT.

The Tasmanian Electoral Commissioner has confirmed that voter participation has surpassed the last local government elections. I encourage people to vote ahead of polls closing tomorrow if they haven’t already done so, but this latest Labor thought bubble is another example of them acting in their own interest, not Tasmania’s.

Compulsory local government voting is not a priority for the Government. As Labor knows, there is a review into the Local Government Act underway which can consider these issues.
