Police hold concerns the public may have access to illicit home-brewed alcohol after a man died in hospital a week after drinking what is believed to be illegally sourced alcohol, NSW Police say.
Police from Liverpool City Police Area Command were alerted when the 57-year-old man was admitted to Liverpool Hospital on 11 September 2018 after a fall.
The West Hoxton Park man’s condition deteriorated and he died yesterday (Tuesday 18 September 2018).
Investigators have been advised by health authorities that the man was suffering the effects of acute methanol poisoning, with a post mortem examination still to be conducted.
Police have been told that while the man regularly drank alcohol, it was not to excess, but it’s believed the alcohol may have been illegally sourced, and possibly home-brewed locally and distributed or sold within the community.
Ten bottles have been seized from the man’s home at West Hoxton Park and taken for forensic examination.
The product implicated is being sold as a variety of "Rakia"or "Rakija".
A report is being prepared for the information of the NSW Coroner.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
