Construction Begins On 70 New Social Homes In Dandenong

VIC Premier

More Victorians will have a place to call home thanks to the Allan Labor Government's social housing investment in Melbourne's south-east.

Minister for Housing and Building Harriet Shing today turned the first sod at the site of a new housing development in Dandenong - a $39 million project which will deliver 70 new energy efficient and environmentally sustainable social housing homes.

The development, delivered by a partnership between Launch Housing and Homes Victoria, will have 40 one-bedroom and 30 two-bedroom apartments, delivering much-needed housing options for people on the Victorian Housing Register, with a focus on people on very low incomes.

The new homes are modern and energy efficient, meaning renters will be warm in winter and cool in summer, while saving on their power bills. At least seven of the homes will be allocated to First Nations residents.

They will be within walking distance to the Dandenong Markets, Dandenong Railway Station and bus stops, and are nearby shops, schools, parks and other essential services.

The 70 new homes build on the 89 social housing homes already underway in Dandenong and delivered in partnership with Launch Housing, with construction activities beginning late last year.

Both projects are part of the Labor Government's record investment to meet the demand for social and affordable housing options across Victoria and provide more Victorians with the dignity and security of a home.

Through our $6.3 billion Big Housing Build and Regional Housing Fund, we are delivering more than 13,300 social and affordable homes across Victoria - with more than 11,800 homes already complete or underway.

In the City of Greater Dandenong alone, we've invested more than $170 million through our social housing programs to build 359 new social and affordable homes, with 99 of these already completed.

As stated by Minister for Housing and Building Harriet Shing

"Every Victorian deserves a place to call home - and with Labor we're delivering exactly that for families in Dandenong and the rest of the state."

"This investment isn't just bricks and mortar, it's providing opportunity and a future through homes that are walking distance from transport, job opportunities, and services - in the places where Victorians want to live."

As stated by Member for Dandenong Gabrielle Williams

"With more than $170 million invested locally, we're seeing real outcomes on the ground in Dandenong - more homes built, more people housed and more families getting the stability they need to thrive."

As stated by Launch Housing CEO Sherri Bruinhout

"Housing changes lives. An affordable home is the foundation for safety, stability, community, and hope. We are proud to work with the Victorian Government and partners to deliver these high-quality homes to Victorians who need them most."
