Palmerston's largest infrastructure project to date, SWELL (Swimming, Wellness, Events, Leisure and Lifestyle), is advancing well and on track for completion by the end of the year.
The SWELL is set to transform the current aging Palmerston Swimming and Fitness Centre into a leisure hub, and be a positive addition to the growing family community of Palmerston, providing residents with a contemporary and family-friendly water and lifestyle precinct.
This $19.4 million project is in line with Council's and the Northern Territory Government's priority in keeping our shared vision of Palmerston as a families city.
The SWELL project will include the refurbishment of the 50-metre pool, a splash and play area, an events area, basketball half court, new and improved accessible toilets and change rooms, a new café and aquatic play structure.
Construction of the SWELL continues to meet key construction milestones with the groundworks complete and on track to open to the public at the end of the year.
The installation of the new and innovative Myrtha System is 40% complete. Myrtha is the latest advanced technology in the swimming pool industry. It is a modular system made with stainless steel which essentially connects together to form perfect waterproofing.
The project has supported local industry, providing economic and employment opportunities, creating 55 local jobs over its lifetime.
The project is funded by the Northern Territory Government contributing $7.5 million, the Australian Government, with $5 million secured through the Building Better Regions Fund, as well as and City of Palmerston contributing $6.9 million.
