Construction of the new Charles Darwin University City Campus has today picked up a rapid pace through the transfer of the Cavenagh St carpark from Darwin City Council to Charles Darwin University, enabling works to begin soon.
Decision making for this City Deal project is now under the control of Charles Darwin University and the Territory Government.
The new campus will bring hundreds of new staff and thousands of students into the Darwin CBD and support a substantial amount of Territory jobs during construction.
This is a massive boost for the CBD and a massive boost for jobs.
Analysis by Deloitte Access Economics has found that the inner-city campus could increase economic output in the Darwin region by more than $250 million during the next 15 years and sustain an extra 100 jobs in the Darwin economy by 2023.
Part of the $200 million Darwin City Deal includes the CDU CBD university campus which will be an iconic world-class precinct for locals and students to enjoy; and will be located on the corner of Cavanagh Street and Garamilla Boulevard.
The Education Precinct is a $225 million project which is expected to be complete and operational in 2024.
The Northern Territory is the safest place in Australia, and we are in pole-position to have the strongest comeback in Australia.
Deloitte Access modelling also predicts the Territory's growth rate in the 2021 financial year to be the highest in the country.
Right now we are saving as many jobs as we can through the coronavirus crisis. The massive pipeline of works, such as the new CDU campus, will put the Territory onto the road to recovery with jobs, not cuts.
The tender for construction works is expected to be issued to shortlisted tenderers shortly, and will be required to comply with NT Government Buy Local provisions.
