Container deposit scheme

The following comments can be attributed to Greater Geelong Mayor Stephanie Asher:

Why does the City think Geelong is the best trial site (for a container deposit scheme)?

Greater Geelong is ideally located for a trial site for many reasons, including our proximity to major transport routes, a high level of community interest and plenty of options for collection and processing sites. We have a diverse population and our region represents a microcosm of Victoria. We have regional, rural and urban areas, a range of topography and waterways including oceans, a bay, rivers and creeks. We also have a mix of residential development, farmland, small and large business and different industry types.

When would the City like to start trialling container deposit redemptions from?

We would like to see this scheme rolled out as efficiently as possible, ensuring all infrastructure requirements and end markets are in place. Three years seems to be an excessively long lead time, and we have urged the state government to fast track the container deposit scheme. Planning for a Victorian container deposit scheme should begin by closely examining the schemes already up and running successfully in other states around Australia. We can look at existing processes to determine what works well, and what would be the best system for our community.
