Trees play an important role in helping create cooler, healthier and more comfortable suburbs.
Nillumbik residents in urban areas can now request a street tree for their nature strip as part of Council's annual street tree planting program.
Street trees do much more than make a street look good. They provide shade on hot days, improve air quality, support local wildlife, reduce urban heat and contribute to healthier, more welcoming suburbs.
Apply by the end of January 2027 to be considered for the next planting season, which will run from May to September.
Each request is assessed to make sure the site is suitable, with tree species selected to suit the location. Factors including the size of the nature strip, nearby powerlines, existing vegetation, intersections and neighbourhood character are all taken into account.
Once planted, Council will maintain the tree for its first two years to help it establish, including watering, mulching, pruning and health checks.
Nillumbik Mayor Cr Naomi Joiner said requesting a street tree was one of the easiest ways residents could help make Nillumbik greener and more resilient.
"Trees are one of our community's most valued assets. They provide shade, support biodiversity, improve wellbeing and help us respond to climate change, so every new street tree is an investment in a cooler, healthier future for our neighbourhoods."
The program is available in the urban areas of Diamond Creek, Eltham, Eltham North, Greensborough, Hurstbridge, Plenty, Research and Wattle Glen, with a particular focus on areas with less tree canopy.
Growing Nillumbik's urban tree canopy is a key action of Council's Urban Tree Canopy Strategy, supporting the goals of the Climate Action Plan and Council Plan by creating cooler streets, enhancing biodiversity and strengthening the green character of our neighbourhoods.
