Got a stash of old chemicals lurking in your garage or garden shed? Then it's time for a spring clean when the NSW Environment Protection Authority's annual Household Chemical CleanOut returns to the Snowy Monaro later this month.
This important initiative gives local residents a free, safe, easy, and responsible way to dispose of household quantities of potentially hazardous chemicals.
The 2025 Household Chemical CleanOut is scheduled for Sunday 30 November 2025 from 11am to 2pm at Cooma Landfill, 8448 Monaro Highway, Cooma.
Residents can drop off household quantities of many common chemicals, up to a maximum of 20 litres or 20 kilograms of a single item. Paint is accepted in quantities up to 100 litres in 20 litre containers.
Transport chemicals safely in original or labelled containers. Wrap containers in newspaper, place in plastic bags and then a tray or bucket. Never mix chemicals.
When chemicals are disposed of improperly they can cause serious damage to the environment and pose a sometimes deadly threat to human and animal health.
Accepted items include:
- Solvents, household cleaners, and ammonia-based cleaners
- Pesticides, herbicides, and poisons
- Pool chemicals
- Motor fuels
- Fluorescent globes and tubes
- Acids and alkalis
- Paint and paint-related products
- Hobby chemicals
- Gas bottles
- Fire extinguishers
- Floor care products
- Car and household batteries
- Motor oils and cooking oils
Paint, fire extinguishers, gas bottles, batteries, and oils can be dropped off for free year-round at your nearest Community Recycling Centre in Cooma or Jindabyne.
