Imagine a world where we all pay it forward and genuinely look out for each other. The Federation Youth Council brought that vision to life at their 'Wear it Blue for Mental Health' event in Corowa, blanketing the community in a wave of kindness that was met with an overwhelmingly positive response.
The event was a powerful initiative by the Youth Council to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health challenges faced by people across the Federation Council area.
Mental health is a significant issue nationwide, with one in five Australians over 16 experiencing mental health issues each year. With statistics showing that 45 per cent of the population will experience some form of mental ill-health in their lifetime, the Youth Council stressed that a simple conversation can save a life. The event aimed to highlight how learning the skills to listen and respond can make a critical difference for someone in crisis.
Embodying the message that change starts with a small gesture, the Youth Council handed out over 200 small gifts to the community. These included flowers from Poppy Emporium, Corowa Golf Club gift cards, coffee vouchers, inspirational notes, and plenty of chocolates and lollies. Crucially, these gifts were accompanied by resources on local mental health services and information on steps toward better wellbeing.
The pop-up event also created a welcoming space for visitors to 'take 5 and chill', offering a free sausage sizzle, a piñata, and a creative tumbler-making station to encourage a focus on personal mental wellbeing.
Federation Council Youth Mayor Max said it was a fantastic event.
"We hope our event made a difference to someone's day, and we encourage everyone to try to be kind to others and pay it forward," he said.
"Being kind makes you feel good about yourself, and it's great for your own mental wellbeing. The success of the day was a true community effort."
Youth Council Mayor Max thanked everyone that dressed in blue, shared their photos, and came to say hello at the pop-up event.
"A big shout out to the Lions Club of Corowa who ran our BBQ and Poppy Emporium for the flowers," he said.
Federation Council Mayor, Cr Cheryl Cook said the Youth Council's 'Wear it Blue' event was a brilliant success and a true testament to the power of community action.
"It's a wonderful reminder that when we genuinely look out for each other and take the time for a simple conversation, we can make a critical difference," she said.
"I'm incredibly proud of our Federation Youth Council for embodying the message that kindness is essential for wellbeing - not just for the person receiving the gift, but for the giver as well. Thank you to everyone who supported this important day."
The Federation Youth Council has shown that a small, unexpected gesture can create a ripple effect of positivity and open the door for vital conversations about mental health.
