Correctional facilities targeted in joint operation at Wellington

Eight people have been charged following a joint operation targeting the introduction of prohibited items into correctional facilities in the state's Orana region.

Between 8am and 1.30pm on Saturday (29 June 2019) and Sunday (30 June 2019), Orana Mid-Western Police and NSW Corrective Services conducted the operation at Wellington and Macquarie Correctional Centres, Mudgee Road, Wellington.

The aim of the operation was to identify, disrupt and prosecute persons in relation to the supply of weapons, tobacco, prohibited drugs, pharmaceutical drugs and other items such mobile phones into the facilities.

During the operation, 408 visitors were screened using drug detection dogs, 126 vehicles were searched, and 239 people had personal property searched.

Officers seized Suboxone strips, white crystal substance, cannabis, tobacco, a syringe, knives and a baseball bat.

Those charged include:

  • A Dubbo man, aged 21, with introduce knives to a Correctional Facility.
  • An Orange woman, aged 35, with supply prohibited drug and introduce prohibited item to a Correctional Facility.
  • A Wellington woman, aged 24, with supply prohibited drug and introduce prohibited item to a Correctional Facility.
  • A Wellington woman, aged 29, with introduce prohibited item to a Correctional Facility (syringe).
  • A Bourke woman, aged 21, with supply prohibited drug and introduce prohibited item to a Correctional Facility.
  • A Dubbo woman, aged 25, with supply prohibited drug and introduce prohibited item to a Correctional Facility.
  • A Griffith woman, aged 28, charged with two outstanding first instance warrants.
  • A Wellington male, aged 28, charged with two first instance warrants and possess prohibited drug (heroin).
