Council approves measures to help Snowy Monaro businesses, community organisations

Snowy Monaro Regional Council has introduced a number of measures to support businesses and community groups struggling with the ongoing financial implications of the 2020 bushfires and COVID-19 restrictions.

At last week's Ordinary Council Meeting, Councillors unanimously voted to waive inspection fees for food premises for the current financial year. Council charges fees in line with the Local Government Act 1993 and the Food Regulation 2015 for inspections of food premises.

"Following feedback from a number of businesses, we heard that they would be unable to pay these fees. Council has waived the inspection charges for the 2019/2020 financial year to provide some relief," Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor Peter Beer said.

Financial assistance will be provided for commercial and community organisations who rent Council-owned properties through a reduction in their rent.

Tenants who experience a loss in revenue between January 1 year and June 30, (compared to the same period in 2019) will be eligible for the reduction.

"We know our businesses and community groups have all been struggling in the last four months," Councillor Beer said.

"First it was the bushfires and now COVID-19. We are all in this together and we will come through these tough times. Council is here to support our community."
