Council Approves Menorah Installation For Hanukkah

Council has unanimously voted to install a Menorah on the balcony at Stonnington City Centre for the duration of Hanukkah in 2025.

Council has also endorsed the proposed Hanukkah Carnival, including a ceremonial candle lighting at Malvern Gardens on 16 December 2025, subject to all administrative requirements being met. In addition, Council has confirmed that broader recognition of cultural festivals will be considered as part of a new Civic Recognition Policy to be developed in the first half of 2026.

Stonnington Mayor Cr Melina Sehr said the decision reflects the values of inclusion, respect and community connection that are central to life in Stonnington.

"Stonnington has a long and proud history of celebrating the many cultures and faiths that call our city home," Cr Sehr said.

"From Christmas and Diwali to Hanukkah, Ramadan, Orthodox traditions, Buddhist observances, Bahai Holy Days and Chinese and Jewish cultural celebrations, these moments bring our community together and highlight the richness and diversity of our municipality."

Cr Sehr said the Menorah installation is an important acknowledgement of the Jewish community's place within Stonnington.

"Stonnington is home to people of many ancestries, languages and faiths. Our role is to foster an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected and supported to celebrate their cultural identity," she said.

"We deeply value the contribution that every cultural and faith community makes to the social fabric of our city. Our commitment is to continue enabling celebrations that bring people together safely, meaningfully and with a sense of shared pride in our community," Cr Sehr added.
