Council Celebrates Power Of Volunteering

Tweed Shire Council

National Volunteer Week will take place later this month with Council spotlighting the incredible individuals who give back to their community.

As part of this celebration, Council will also be hosting a special Volunteer Expo to share information with people who may be interested in giving their time to help Council's cultural facilities, community care teams and nature care groups.

Running from Monday 19 to Sunday 25 May, National Volunteer Week 2025 is Australia's largest annual celebration of volunteering. This year's theme, 'Connecting Communities' recognises the vital role volunteering plays in bringing people together and strengthening community ties.

Mayor of Tweed Shire Chris Cherry said the week will be an important opportunity to reflect on the power of community connection and the ways in which volunteers from across the Tweed help the community to thrive.

"Volunteers are the quiet champions of our community– showing up when it matters most. Thank you to all those who give their time to respond to emergencies, patrol our coastline, or restore our natural spaces," Cr Cherry said.

"These dedicated people also bring life to our Gallery, Museum, local charity shops, our animal shelters, our local sports clubs, community facilities and events, their impact is everywhere. Today, and every day, we recognise their efforts and say thank you."

Tweed Shire Council Volunteer Expo – make a difference across the Tweed!

To help connect more locals with volunteering opportunities, Council will host a Volunteer Expo during National Volunteer Week.

Council staff will be on hand to chat about a range of volunteer opportunities available at the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre, Tweed Regional Museum, events such as Tweed Seniors Festival and with Nature Care Groups like Landcare and Dunecare.

Shannon Carruth, Council's Manager of Inclusive and Creative Communities, said volunteering is for everyone - from young people building their futures, to retirees looking to stay connected.

"The Volunteer Expo is an invitation to grow your skills, meet new people, or simply give back. It will help you find a volunteer role in your community that fits your life and your passions," Ms Carruth said.

Council would like to take this week to again spotlight volunteers that were celebrated at the Tweed Australia Day Awards in January. Local volunteer Gary Setchell was awarded Volunteer of the Year (Individual) for his work helping vulnerable people in Murwillumbah. Gary was commemorated for his kindness and compassion, and his devotion to helping those in need at Nullum House, a local drop-in centre.

The Tyalgum Scratchers who maintain the iconic Coolman Street in Tyalgum were presented with the Volunteer of the Year (group) Award for their tireless work in creating and maintaining the must-see garden attraction that adds to Tyalgum's charm. The group creates a space for locals to stay active, connect and bring a sense of community pride to Tyalgum.
