The Mayor and Kiama Councillors attended a financial workshop this week, following a resolution of council to hold one by the end of August.

The workshop was presented by Kiama Council's expert consultants KPMG and was attended by the Mayor, Councillors and the executive team.

"The information conveyed during the workshop was nothing new but, given the depth, complexity and urgency of our current financial circumstances, I used my Mayoral Minute at our last Ordinary Council Meeting to request a workshop. The purpose was to help us better understand where we are, and how we can move forward," said Kiama Mayor Neil Reilly.

Kiama Council has been open and transparent about its financial situation, going so far as to publish a letter from the NSW Auditor General last week that succinctly outlines the challenges we currently face, including going concern issues.

The sole subject of the workshop was cashflow projections for the next two years.

"Giving Councillors this extra knowledge and the opportunity to digest the information will assist them to make the decisions necessary to ensure we continue to work towards long-term financial sustainability," said Cr Reilly.

"As I've said before, it is vitally important that Councillors work together as a team, to make business-critical decisions," he said.

Councillors have requested a second workshop, to be held in the coming week, to further consider improving cashflow.
