Council Debuts Collections And Keepers Exhibit

Murray River Council

Murray River Council has officially launched Collections and their Keepers; a collection of photographic story-telling materials to promote the River Country Heritage Trail.

The photographs celebrate the region's unique heritage objects and the dedicated volunteers who care for them.

The project is the culmination of several years of collaboration between Council's Museum Advisor and four local heritage groups:

  • Friends of Old Moama (Telegraph Station & Captain's Cottage)
  • Border Flywheelers, Barham
  • Moulamein Heritage Village
  • Old Moulamein Courthouse

Visiting photographic artist Nina O'Brien worked with each group to capture a series of striking portraits featuring significant heritage objects alongside their local "keepers." Each image is accompanied by a short story highlighting the item's historical importance and the personal connection held by those who protect it.

Mayor, Cr John Harvie said the project has been delivered to promote the historical collections housed in museums across the area and the volunteers who are caretakers of their stories.

"The Collections and their Keepers project is a powerful tribute to the work of our local volunteers and a great way to showcase our local museums."

"We now have an extraordinary set of images that tell the stories of historical objects housed at these museums and the connection they have to our people and our communities."

"It's a new and exciting way to boost cultural tourism, support volunteer groups and strengthen local pride in the region's history," Cr Harvie said.

As part of the project, each museum is profiling a number of key objects from their collection.

Collections and their Keepers campaign and exhibition officially launches on December 3.
