Council Elects Clr Chloe Smith As Deputy Mayor For Second Time

Inner West Council

At Tuesday night's Inner West Council meeting, Councillor Chloe Smith was elected deputy mayor for a second time.

Following Councillor Mat Howard's 12-month term, Councillor Smith will serve a second term having first been elected as the Inner West's youngest ever deputy mayor in 2023 at just 29 years of age.

Born and raised in the Inner West, Councillor Smith attended local schools (Yeo Park Public School and Ashbury Public School) and was active in the Ashbury Netball Club.

A resident of Petersham, Chloe can be found barracking for the Newtown Jets at Henson Park and exploring the world-class restaurants and cafes of the Inner West.

Chloe is passionate about a progressive council and ensuring that young people have a voice in local decision-making.

As 25 to 39 year-olds are the largest group of residents in the Inner West, Chloe believes it is critical that young people are represented at the local government level on the issues that affect them the most – including housing, the climate crisis, and support for live music and the arts.

Councillor Smith said, "It's the privilege of a lifetime to serve our community as deputy mayor for the second time.

"The Inner West is one of the most vibrant, inclusive, and engaged communities anywhere in the world and our council should aspire to be the same.

"Together we're building good local public services while taking action on the issues that matter to our community:

  • delivering thousands of desperately needed new homes to tackle the housing crisis, including building public housing on council land
  • establishing the Enmore Road Special Entertainment Precinct, the first of its kind in NSW, and establishing six new precincts across the Inner West
  • activating our town halls as free creative and live music hubs
  • the early roll out of FOGO to cut emissions and landfill and delivering hundreds of new electric vehicle chargers
  • investing in critical community services like our pools, libraries, parks, and sports clubs so that Inner Westies can access first-class facilities

"There's more to do and I'm looking forward to working with our community to deliver even more over the next 12 months."
