Council Enforces Unattended Property Rules at Jindabyne

Old and broken kayaks and other small watercraft littering the Lake Jindabyne foreshore in the shade of lake-front conifers

Rangers from Snowy Monaro Regional Council are stepping up enforcement of unattended property rules on the Lake Jindabyne foreshore this summer, following an increase in resident complaints.

During December, rangers will be stickering unattended property that has been left in public areas of the foreshore for more than seven days.

Based on community reports, Council is targeting boats and trailers, as well as recreational equipment like kayaks, bikes and other small or medium-sized items.

Council will collect and dispose of all items not removed by their owners within the notice period. Depending on the kind of property left unattended, owners will have between 3 and 15 days from the date these notices are affixed to remove their items.

Abandoned or unattended property left in public places is a safety hazard and affects the amenity of our outdoor recreation areas.

Under legislation introduced in 2023, Council has the authority to move or remove unattended items from public places, impound unattended property, and issue fines.

Jindabyne residents have expressed concerns to Council in recent weeks about a range of items left abandoned on the foreshore and the risks these items pose to the public.

Most of the items in question are damaged or broken recreation equipment like kayaks and bicycles, but Council is aware of full-size watercraft and boat trailers left unattended in the foreshore precinct.

While legislation gives Council the power to issue fines for unattended property, the likelihood of identifying the owner of small and medium-sized items is low. Council's focus is cleaning up the foreshore for our community to enjoy over summer.

Council encourages members of the public to report abandoned items to us directly using the Snap Send Solve smartphone app. Visit www.snapsendsolve.com today.
