A flag-raising ceremony at the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima, on Tuesday has marked NAIDOC Week 2026 in Lake Macquarie, celebrating 50 years of recognising and honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Community members, local leaders and representatives of the city's Aboriginal community came together for the event, which highlighted the significance of this year's theme, 50 Years of Deadly.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the ceremony was an important opportunity for the community to come together, reflect and celebrate.
"NAIDOC Week is a time for us to recognise the strength, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and to celebrate the world's oldest living cultures," he said.
"This year's milestone of 50 years of NAIDOC is a powerful reminder of how far we've come and the journey still ahead. It recognises the contributions of our Elders, leaders and communities, and inspires the next generation to continue building a strong future grounded in culture and connection."
NAIDOC Week has been celebrated across Australia for decades, growing from a movement for recognition and rights into a national celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture.
This year's theme celebrates the people who have shaped the NAIDOC journey, including Elders, artists, educators, advocates and young people, while acknowledging the strength and resilience of communities today.
Mayor Adam said the ceremony's strong annual attendance reflected community support for NAIDOC Week and respect for First Nations culture.
"It's fantastic to see so many people share in this important moment," he said.
"Events like this bring our community together to listen, learn and walk forward with a deeper understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people."
NAIDOC Week runs until 12 July, with a range of events taking place across Lake Macquarie.
They include an art workshop at Windale Hub, bilyabayi, on Thursday at 11am, a storytime session at Toronto Library, tirrabiyangba, on Friday at 10.30am, and an afternoon of dance, workshops and live music at MAP mima on Saturday.
Bahtabah Local Aboriginal Land Council is hosting an Eastlakes NAIDOC family fun day at Pelican foreshore on 17 July, including pony rides, a sausage sizzle and live music.
