Demolition, Cleanup Start at 88 Wallace St, Braidwood

Artistic concept 88 Wallace Street facade

Contractors will soon begin site demolition and remediation at 88 Wallace Street, Braidwood as part of the project to create a long-stay public car park and community space.

Demolition and remediation works are scheduled from 31 August to 22 October 2026, subject to weather, site conditions and any unexpected contamination findings.

The former D&S Motors site contains legacy automotive infrastructure, including vehicle inspection pits and underground fuel systems, with potential soil contamination and hazardous materials.

The demolition and remediation works are needed to remove these structures safely, manage any contamination, protect the community and environment, and confirm the site is suitable for the proposed public car park and community space.

During this stage, Council will:

  • Demolish the former D&S Motors buildings and associated structures.
  • Salvage suitable roof trusses, bricks, doors and timber for reuse in the new public space.
  • Safely remove hazardous and contaminated materials to appropriately licensed facilities.
  • Remove the underground petroleum storage tanks and vehicle inspection pits.
  • Engage an environmental consultant to inspect and test the surrounding soil.
  • Remediate or dispose of any contaminated soil in accordance with the Remediation Action Plan and regulatory requirements.

The future construction stage of the project will include future-ready EV fast-charging infrastructure, public toilets including accessible toilet facilities, a pedestrian link to Wallace Street, a market pod, storage, event power and rest areas. The project will improve visitor amenity, encourage longer stopovers and strengthen Braidwood's role as a key destination between Canberra and the South Coast.
