Council highlights Local Government Week 2023

Local Government Week 2023

Local Government Week, occurring 31 July to Sunday 6 August 2023 is the perfect opportunity to celebrate our community.

Council staff and volunteers across NSW look after more than $178 billion worth of community assets – parks, pools and playgrounds; libraries, local festivals and lighting, cemeteries and childcare centres, museums and art galleries. Local Government Week offers the chance to reflect on the major role Federation Council plays in improving and maintaining our services and infrastructure that you need to work, rest and play, 365 days a year.

Federation Council Mayor, Councillor Patrick Bourke said we are a reflection of the complex communities we serve each and every day and Council will use this week to highlight some of the many services we provide to the local community.

"We operate free local libraries in Corowa, Howlong and Mulwala, provide spaces for community groups, administer grants, maintain playgrounds and sporting fields to name a few," he said.

"During this special week we encourage people to explore some of the ways Federation Council is part of your daily life, and to showcase some of the things we do for the community. You probably know all about roads, rates and rubbish but did you know we also manage and maintain the Corowa Aquatic Centre, Community Grants Program (which opens on Monday 7 August 2023), the Corowa Visitor Information Centre, the North of the Murray tourism brand and some of the many community advisory committees such as Youth Council, Ageing Well, Recreation and Hall Committees, and so much more. Councils are helping to drive a locally led economy by employing accountants, labourers and librarians; cleaners, carpenters and pool life guards; electricians, engineers and educators."

Mayor Bourke said Council also advocates for the interests of our community in planning matters and other issues that affect local liveability, sustainability, safety and amenity.
