Council Investigates New Year's Eve Drone Show

Shellharbour City Council has endorsed a proposal to investigate the feasibility of hosting an environmentally and pet friendly New Year's Eve event at Shell Cove Harbour over Shellharbour South Beach.

The proposal to pursue a major New Year's Eve event, including a light display of 500 drones, was endorsed at Council's Ordinary Meeting on Tuesday, 24 February.

The decision follows a report that detailed a range of potential event formats, show sizes and locations, as well as crowd capacity, traffic and parking arrangements and sustainable waste practices.

The proposed drone light show would start at 9pm and headline the event with an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional New Year's Eve fireworks displays, while also providing a pet-friendly atmosphere for nearby residents.

"Drone light shows are low‑noise, low‑impact and are considered more suitable for pets and wildlife while still offering a spectacular visual experience," Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said.

To proceed with the event, Council will need to secure external funding estimated at over $200,000 through grants or sponsorships, with a planning approval deadline set for May 2026.

Planning will continue over the coming months, with a further report outlining funding outcomes, approvals and operational feasibility to be presented to Shellharbour City Council before a final decision is made.

"This is an exciting and innovative way our community could come together, however there is still work to do to understand what is achievable," Mayor Homer said.
