Council making strides towards sustainable future

Mildura Rural City Council has released its latest Environmental Sustainability Report, revealing major cuts to emissions, water usage and waste going to landfill over the past 12 months.

During 2022-23, Council made the following progress:

  • reduced emissions by 650 tCO2-e
  • upgraded over 1,700 street lights to energy efficient LEDs, cutting Council's annual street lighting electricity usage by a third
  • installed four electric vehicle charger points powered by 100% renewable electricity
  • reduced water usage by 22% on the previous year
  • directly engaged over 1,613 residents in environmental and waste education
  • diverted and recycled 2,567 tonnes of green waste at the Mildura Landfill
  • planted 1,137 trees in urban areas.

Councillor for Environmental Sustainability Jason Modica said greenhouse emissions, electricity, fleet, water, biodiversity, waste and community engagement were at the forefront of the organisation's progress.

"Like many organisations, we are committed to doing what we can to operate more sustainably in each of these areas to ensure we protect the natural environment for our future generations," Cr Modica said.

"This report is a valuable tool to measure how we are progressing as we work towards our aim of slashing our carbon emissions.

"It serves as a pivotal health check and gives an insight into the benefits of the work we've been undertaking in recent years."

In 2020, Council became the 30thlocal government in Victoria, and the 94thin Australia, to declare a climate emergency and continues to strive to set an example of responsible environmental management.
