The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, has expressed solidarity with the people of Ukraine on their Independence Day on 24 August. This message comes amid continued attacks and ongoing peace talks concerning Ukraine's future:
"Dear Ukrainians! You belong in our European family - today and always. On this Independence Day, the Council of Europe stands with you. In war, for justice and into peace. A just and lasting peace - in Ukraine, with Europe, on the values we share. For an eternally free, independent, and proud Ukraine. З днем незалежності!" the Secretary General said.
The Council of Europe has consistently condemned violations of international law and continues to urge respect for human rights and the restoration of peace.
Through its Action Plan on "Resilience, Recovery and Reconstruction for Ukraine," the Organisation is providing targeted support for democratic institutions, the rule of law, and civil society, even in the midst of war.
