Council Prepares To Prune Bunya Pines For Safer CBD

Wagga Wagga City Council is preparing to undertake some key work in the city's tree tops next week, with plans in place to remove several large mature pinecones from the Bunya pines in Collins Park and along The Esplanade.

The pruning works will begin on Wednesday 4 March, on the Bunya pines in Collins Park, before moving on to the pines near Wollundry Lagoon on Thursday 5 March.

All works will be undertaken between 6.30am and 4.30pm on both days, weather permitting.

Team Leader Parks Operations Graeme Clark said the pre-emptive pruning forms part of Council's ongoing care of the trees, many of which are more than 100 years old.

"We're currently at the peak of bunya season, and most of these culturally significant trees are carrying a heavy crop of rapidly-maturing cones," Mr Clark said.

"A fully grown bunya cone can weigh up to 10 kilograms. When you consider some of these trees stand more than 30 metres tall, falling cones present a genuine risk to people and animals below, so it's essential that we undertake these works now."

Mr Clark confirmed that a large crane will be used in the process to safely remove the cones at both locations.

"On Wednesday at Collins Park, the crane will access the trees via Fox Street, while on Thursday, the eastbound lane of The Esplanade between Collins and Best streets will be closed while the works are underway near Wollundry Lagoon," he said.

Traffic control will be in place as required in both locations.

Bus drivers who usually park near Collins Park amenities are asked to use alternative parking around the corner on Wednesday.

Visitors to Collins Park and those walking or jogging along the northern side of The Esplanade are also asked to follow directions from Council staff during the works.

Council appreciates the community's patience while we carry out this important work to maintain the safety and long-term health of these iconic trees.
