Tweed Shire Council will today welcome the NSW Premier and Cabinet Ministers to the region as part of the State Government's Community Cabinet program, an important opportunity to put the Tweed's needs and priorities directly in front of the state's decision-makers.

Council has worked hard to ensure the needs of the Tweed's community are represented on the state stage, and the visit marks a key moment to advance critical issues across infrastructure, housing, water security, environmental resilience and more.

The Community Cabinet program is part of the NSW Government's commitment to ensuring regional voices are heard and reflected in decision-making. By visiting communities like Tweed Heads, Ministers gain first-hand insight into local needs and can work in partnership with councils and residents to shape policy and service delivery.

Tweed Shire Council will advocate for several high-priority issues critical to the region's resilience and liveability during the Community Cabinet visit including:

  • Clarrie Hall Dam: Urgent determination of the EIS, retirement of biodiversity credits, and potential land transfer to National Parks. Meeting with Ministers Paul Scully and Penny Sharpe.
  • Coastal Erosion: Support for reinstating beach and emergency access damaged by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Meeting with Minister Penny Sharpe.
  • M1/Kennedy Drive Interchange: Progressing planning, design and funding to address traffic and safety concerns. Meeting with Minister Jenny Aitchison.
  • Water Infrastructure Recovery: Addressing funding gaps and advocating for resilience upgrades like generators at pump stations. Meeting with Ministers Rose Jackson and Paul Scully.

Mayor of Tweed Shire, Chris Cherry, stressed the importance of open dialogue and collaborative action between all levels of government.

"The people of the Tweed are resilient, but resilience should not mean going it alone. We need strong partnerships with the State Government to deliver solutions that are practical, fully funded and designed with the needs of our community in mind," Cr Cherry said.

This will be the Minns Government's third Community Cabinet for 2025 and follows similar visits to the Central Coast, South Coast, Broken Hill, Orange, and other key regional centres.

"The North Coast, including Tweed Heads have faced a difficult few years, from historic floods, to Cyclone Alfred as well as the threat of fire ants along the Queensland border – it is not an exaggeration to say this part of our state is home to some of the most resilient communities in our country," Mr Minns said.

The visit will include a Community Forum in the afternoon on Wednesday 30 July where members of the public have registered to engage with the Premier and Ministers through a Q&A session.

"We welcome the Premier and Cabinet to the Tweed and appreciate the opportunity to raise local priorities. This visit allows us to engage on a wide range of issues and advocate for real investment in our region's future," Cr Cherry said.
