Townsville City Council has commissioned an international artist to transform the back of The Brewery, a landmark building in the central business district.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the mural is an important addition to Council's street art program.
"We identified The Brewery as a key destination space early in our planning process," Cr Hill said.
"It is an iconic entrance point to the city and this artwork will greet residents when they cross George Roberts Bridge."
Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Cr Colleen Doyle said Council's street art program in the CBD was attracting the best local and international artists.
"We're thrilled we have secured internationally renowned French artist, Mantra," Cr Doyle.
"He's a self-taught painter who has been active since 2008. This mural will show a woman reading a book about the Great Barrier Reef."
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the project is an important part of Council's street art program.
"Council has endorsed a Street Art Framework that outlines how we plan and commission all our street art projects," Cr Greaney said.
"We rotate between local, national and international artists and this time we're bringing a touch of France to The Brewery.
"Mantra is currently working on the project and the building is a large canvas so we'd encourage people in the city to go and watch him at work."
