Council Unveils Get Summer Ready on Water Safety Day

Georges River Council

Georges River Council has launched its Get Summer Ready campaign. This aims to remind residents about the importance of water safety as summer nears.

The campaign aligns with National Water Safety Day on Monday, 1 December. This initiative aims to lower drowning deaths across Australia.

According to Royal Life Saving Australia's website, from 2015 to 2025, 183 children aged 0–4 drowned. Of these, 65 percent happened in swimming pools. Most of these tragedies happened in backyard pools where gates were left open or not properly closed. Drowning risk for young children peaks in the warmer months, with 35 percent occurring in summer.

Mayor Elise Borg visited Council's Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre, run by BlueFit, to see swimming lessons in action ahead of the campaign launch.

"Water safety starts at home and in our community," Mayor Borg said. "We want families to enjoy summer, but that means being vigilant.

"Always supervise children around water, check your pool gates, and never assume accidents can't happen."

"Whether you're at a backyard pool, the beach or enjoying water activities at the Georges River, preparation and caution are key. Together, we can make this summer safe for everyone."

The Get Summer Ready campaign encourages residents to:

  • Always actively supervise children near pools and waterways

  • If you are a weak or non-swimmer, appreciate the water from a distance

  • Teach children water safety skills, including learn how to swim

  • Ensure pool gates and latches are secure

  • Swim at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags

  • Avoid drugs and alcohol around water
