Horsham Rural City Council used a series of meetings with Liberal and Nationals representatives this week to advocate for strategic investment that will help regional communities prepare for major economic growth and ensure local communities share in the benefits it delivers.
Council met with Liberal and Nationals MPs and representatives, including Member for Southern Metropolitan David Davis MP, Member for Lowan Emma Kealy MP, Member for Western Victoria Bev McArthur MP and David Littleproud MP, the federal Shadow Minister for Emergency Management and Tourism, to discuss regional priorities.
Mayor Cr Brian Klowss said potential major investment in renewable energy, transmission, mining and agriculture presented an unprecedented opportunity to create jobs, attract new residents and strengthen the regional economy.
"Growth is welcome, but regional communities need investment before major projects begin so we can support that growth and share in the benefits," Cr Klowss said.
Council's advocacy reflects the Horsham Rural City Council Plan 2025–2029, including its focus on sustainable growth, improved transport and services, resilient community infrastructure, and stronger partnerships with other levels of government.
In partnership with neighbouring councils through the Wimmera Southern Mallee Councils Alliance, Council is working to secure coordinated investment that helps communities prepare for growth and protects regional liveability.
These include:
• Funded Wimmera Southern Mallee Economic Transition Plan
• Rural-ready community benefit fund
• Long-term funding for rural roads and bridges
• Mental health services
• Disaster recovery and emergency management
• Regional tourism infrastructure to enable regional events
"The Wimmera Southern Mallee is one of Australia's most productive agricultural regions and is nationally significant. We are ready for growth, but strategic investment is needed to keep pace with the opportunities ahead," Cr Klowss said.
Council also sought government support for priority local projects that improve transport connections, community safety, recreation, economic development and access to resilient public infrastructure.
Local priorities include the Horsham Bypass, Regional Sports Facility, aerodrome upgrades, Horsham CBD CCTV upgrade, Cameron Oval Laharum Community Facility, Horsham Railway Corridor Revitalisation and A-Double truck readiness.
