Council Vows Safer West & Stephen St. Intersection

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is committed to making the West and Stephen Street intersection safer for community members by undertaking important roadworks from Sunday, 8 June, 2025 until mid July.

TRC Construction and Maintenance (Infrastructure Services) portfolio spokesperson Councillor Carol Taylor said TRC had prioritised safety improvements for this busy intersection.

"We want to minimise any risks and ensure our road infrastructure is as safe as possible for our community," Cr Taylor said.

The scheduled safety upgrades include changes to the traffic signals, traffic light phasing, pedestrian crossing facilities and improvements to the pram ramps, curb and drainage systems.

Council has taken specific planning measures to ensure the duration of construction works have minimal impact on the community.

"We are conducting night works and staging any road closures to ensure all road users, pedestrians and residents of the area are impacted as little as possible," Cr Taylor said.

Road closures and detours will be in place throughout the duration of the works however, Council will maintain local access to residences and businesses within the closure areas.

Roadworks and road closures dates:

The following dates are subject to weather and construction conditions permitting.

Sunday 8 June (night works 6pm to 6am - conduit & pit install)

  • West Street (northern leg) will be closed for one night.

Monday 9 June (night works 6:30pm to 6am - conduit & pit install)

  • West Street (southern leg) will be closed for one night.

Wednesday 11 June to Sunday 22 June (day works - conduit & pit install)

  • Stephen Steet (western leg) will be closed for approximately 1.5 weeks from Wednesday 11 June, 2025.

Monday 23 June to Friday 4 July (day works - conduit & pit install)

  • Stephen Street (eastern leg) will the closed for approximately two weeks from Monday 23 June, 2025.

Early July (date to be confirmed - large lighting and signals infrastructure)

  • Full intersection closure will be required for one night only. A separate notice will be distributed closer to this closure.
  • Both Stephen Street legs will remain closed until new traffic signals are commissioned.

Early to late July (dates to be confirmed - pram ramps, footpath resurfacing, small lighting and signals infrastructure)

  • Additional day works with impacts on Stephen Street legs of the intersection.
  • Western leg of Stephen Street closed for approximately one week.
  • Eastern leg of Stephen Street closed for approximately one week.
