Council's 2026-27 Budget Talks Begin in December

Public submissions will play a significant role earlier in the process as Colac Otway Shire Council seeks ideas for the 2026-27 Budget.

The community will have two months to put forward Budget proposals in December and January.

There will be a Submissions Committee meeting at a future date for people to speak to their ideas.

In previous years, public consultation on a draft Budget happened late in the process, in April and May, before it being finally adopted in June.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Tenni said receiving submissions in December and January, with a subsequent submissions hearing, would allow Council additional time to consider ideas and proposals as the budget is being developed, rather than responding later in the process when it is largely set.

"By inviting community submissions early, Council is putting emphasis on the development stage of the Budget process where Councillors and officers can be better informed about the community's thoughts and priorities."

Mr Tenni said the revised process was open, upfront and practical.

"This new approach, where far greater emphasis on community input is at the start of the process, where it counts, is an approach that a number of other Councils are doing as well. In the future we will continue to build on this emphasis.

"If you want input into how community facilities, services or how Council spends its money generally, please get in early."
