Councils Unveil Wear Change Initiative

Georges River Council

Georges River Council, in partnership with Sutherland Shire Council, is hosting Wear the Change, a free youth-focused sustainability event at Kirrawee Library+.

The event will feature a clothes swap, where attendees can bring pre-loved clothing in good condition to exchange with others. It's a fun and sustainable way to give old favourites a second life, discover unique new pieces, and refresh your wardrobe.

Attendees can also enjoy music, free food, and a series of hands-on workshops, including:

  • Sewing basics – learn simple techniques to repair clothes and extend their lifespan.

  • Styling tips – discover creative ways to mix and match items and refresh your wardrobe.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "Wear the Change is a great way for young people to have fun while learning about sustainable fashion.

"By swapping clothes and learning simple repair skills, participants can reduce textile waste and make a positive impact on the environment.

"Council is thrilled to partner with Sutherland Shire Council to bring this event to life.

"We invite young people aged 14 and over to bring clothes to swap, join a workshop, and enjoy an afternoon of music, food, and fun with friends."

Sutherland Shire Mayor, Jack Boyd said this joint initiative with Georges River Council highlights how our communities can work together for smarter, more sustainable fashion choices.

"By empowering young people to repair, restyle and reuse, we're strengthening the circular economy and keeping textiles out of landfill at this hands-on, creative event at Sutherland Shire Council's Kirrawee Library+," Mayor Boyd said.
