Bass Coast Shire Council is closing the missing gaps in the local tracks and trails network, with plans now underway for a new shared path that will provide a continuous off-road link between Cowes and Ventnor.
The Ventnor Road Shared Path will include the design and construction of two kilometres of new concrete pathway, linking existing shared path. This will deliver a 4.5-kilometre connection between the townships, making walking, cycling and other forms of active transport safer and more enjoyable for the community.
Importantly, the new link will tie directly into the Phillip Island Road Shared Path, which long term will go all the way to Inverloch. The Ventnor Road Shared Path will also connect into the Phillip Island Sporting Precinct and the Cowes to Rhyll Shared Path, strengthening Bass Coast's growing tracks and trails network.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Rochelle Halstead, said the project responds directly to the strong community demand for safer active transport options and was an action from the Tracks and Trails Strategy Delivery Plan 2025-29.
"This project is all about closing the missing gaps and giving people a safe and accessible path all the way from Cowes to Ventnor. It will make a big difference for locals and visitors who want to walk or ride between townships without relying on their cars. By creating these connections, we're building a healthier, more sustainable and more connected community," Cr Halstead said.
The shared path will be a 2 to 2.5 metre-wide concrete trail constructed within service roads and the road reserve along Ventnor Road.
The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government's Active Transport Fund and Bass Coast Shire Council each contributing $980,000.
Community consultation is now open, and Council is encouraging residents, business owners and visitors to share their views to help shape the final design. Feedback can be provided through the Engage Bass Coast website.
