Cr Gates reveals a dynamic 2019-20 Mayoral Program

Mayor Colleen Gates

Community connectedness, open space and innovation will be the three key focus areas of the 2019-20 Mayoral Program.

Mayor of Hobsons Bay Councillor Colleen Gates said the three areas centre around community wellbeing, inclusiveness, better care for the environment and how we can leverage community-led innovation to be a leader within the local government sector.

Mayoral Program projects and initiatives include:

Community Connectedness: developing a short video series to recognise volunteer organisations across Hobsons Bay and their pivotal role in contributing to the quality of life in our community; stepping up the Hobsons Bay City Council Junior Council program with local primary school children; and holding Youth Focus Groups on topics such as climate change, waste management and technology to help Council deliver services and support for young people below the age of 25.

Open Space: rolling out Council's Better Places Program, with the first project to focus on the Laverton precinct; supporting the second phase of the Cool Streets Program across Hobsons Bay to increase tree canopy; and inviting the public to participate in an initiative to create awareness and celebrate local biodiversity and the significance of habitat.

Innovation: advocating for opportunities to introduce Smart Technology to change how Council provides products and services to the community; supporting the official launch of the Creative Technology Hub at the Seaworks Maritime Precinct in February 2020; and championing the roll out of the new kerbside collection system Recycling 2.0.

As stated by Mayor of Hobsons Bay Cr Colleen Gates:

"We know our residents treasure our coastline, parks and open space. This program will place focus on how Council and the community can protect, enhance and share these spaces for all."

"Volunteers are the glue in our community and we need to showcase the great work being delivered by some of these volunteer organisations."

"By engaging with some of the younger generations in our community, we hope to bring more innovation and fresh thinking into how we deliver products and services for the municipality."
