Cricket Victoria is proud to announce the renaming of the David Jukes Volunteer of the Year Award, an annual honour recognising the extraordinary contribution of community cricket officials who dedicate countless hours to the game at grassroots level.
The award presented each year to a male and female recipient, will now also celebrate the enduring legacy of David Jukes, whose passion for community cricket and commitment to volunteers left a lasting impact across the Victorian cricket landscape.
David's dedication to community cricket was best exemplified through his lifelong service to Prahran Cricket Club for more than 34 years.
First to arrive and last to leave Toorak Park, David was a constant presence on match days and training nights, driven by a simple commitment to ensuring everything was ready for the players.
From organising playing kits and keeping track of practice balls, to preparing drinks, lunches and afternoon tea, no task was ever too small. He also took responsibility for the behind-the-scenes essentials, including paying umpires and ensuring the smooth running of each match.
Recipients of the annual award will now receive a $2,500 equipment voucher to support their local club, along with a $2,500 personal voucher in recognition of their individual contribution and service to the game.
Made possible through a generous bequest from the Jukes Estate to the Cricket Victoria Foundation, the award not only honours David Jukes' passion for grassroots cricket, but reinvests directly into community clubs, helping to strengthen the foundations of Victorian cricket for future generations.
"David had an enormous respect for volunteers and the role they play in keeping community cricket alive," said Jukes Estate family member John Kenez.
"This award reflects his belief that the game is built on the dedication of people who give their time, energy and passion to their clubs, often without recognition."
"Our family is proud to see his legacy live on through an initiative that supports both volunteers and the clubs they serve."
Through this initiative, Cricket Victoria ensures that the dedication of volunteers is celebrated and that David Jukes' legacy continues to inspire the Victorian cricket community.
