Critical incident declared after crash in Sydney Harbour Tunnel

A critical incident investigation has been launched following a crash in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel after police attempted to stop a motorcycle today, NSW Police say.

About 1.45pm (Friday 7 September 2018), officers from the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command observed a motorcycle allegedly travelling south on the Warringah Freeway at speed.

Officers activated warning sirens and lights in an attempt to stop the motorcycle.

A short time later, police found the motorcycle had hit the back of a vehicle travelling south in the tunnel.

The male rider was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a serious condition.

Officers from North Shore Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene.

The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

A Critical Incident Team will now investigate all the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be subject to independent review.

Diversions are expected to remain in place for several hours and motorists are urged to take an alternate route.
