Critical Incident Declared Following Fairfield Man's Death

A critical incident investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding a man's death in Sydney's south-west last week.

Just before 10.30pm on Tuesday 24 October 2023, police have been told two men, aged 40 and 36, were involved in an argument in a public thoroughfare off The Crescent in Fairfield.

It will be further alleged the younger man assaulted the 40-year-old man, who then fell to the ground.

The 40-year-old man was then allegedly placed on a nearby bench.

About 10.20am on Wednesday 25 October 2023, a passer-by found the man unresponsive and called emergency services.

The 40-year-old man was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition, where he later died.

Officers from Fairfield Police Area Command were later notified and commenced an investigation.

Investigators charged a 36-year-old man, and he remains before the courts.

Following inquiries, a critical incident investigation was declared today (Thursday 2 November 2023) with officers from Cumberland Police Area Command to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the actions of police.

That investigation will be subject to independent review.
