Critical inquiry into disability established Newly elected Greens MP Abigail Boyd will sit on an urgent inquiry into the Government's bill for a proposed ageing and disability commissioner which was established as a Greens initiative.

The Social Issues committee will consider the Ageing and Disability Commissioner Bill with a short, sharp inquiry looking at the merits of the bill. Greens MP and Disability spokesperson Abigail Boyd said: "Older people and adults with a disability need a strong and independent commissioner who is able to properly address their needs.

"While the Bill is broadly supported there are a number of potential gaps that this inquiry will look into.

"There are significant concerns about the proposed laws including a lack of enforcement, prosecution and referral powers for the new commissioner.

"This inquiry will be an important opportunity for Parliament to consider any shortcomings in the proposed model, hear from stakeholders and independent experts and use that information in making laws," Ms Boyd said.
