CRTC Moves to Improve Cellphone Coverage Information

Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission

The CRTC is helping Canadians better understand where cellphone coverage is available and where there may be gaps.

Following a public consultation, the CRTC is introducing a new approach for how service providers report on their cellphone networks. This will give Canadians more detailed information about cellphone coverage in a specific area, making it easier to compare service options.

Canadians will also be able to report locations where coverage maps do not reflect their experience. This feedback will help improve the accuracy of information over time and provide a clearer picture of connectivity needs across Canada.

The CRTC collects data from service providers on their coverage and provides this information to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), which uses it for its National Broadband Map. Better data will help service providers and governments identify areas where there are gaps, supporting planning and investments that improve connectivity.

The CRTC is also making it easier for Canadians to find, compare and choose the Internet and cellphone services that meet their needs. Recent measures include eliminating extra fees on Internet and cellphone plans, improving how Canadians are notified about expiring contracts and discounts, giving Canadians more ways to change or cancel their plans and making it easier to compare Internet plans.
