Culburra Surfing Legend

Mayor Amanda Findley has taken a moment at tonight's Ordinary Meeting to congratulate Shoalhaven's Owen Wright, on his success in the recent World Surf League Tahiti Pro Teahupo'o.

The Culburra Beach local surfing legend won the Tahiti Pro Teahupp'o surfing title after defeating Brazil's Gabriel Medina in the final. Mayor Amanda Findley stated that Owen Wright is an inspirational person who has worked hard to get to where he is today.

"For those that don't know Owen's story, he suffered a traumatic brain injury while surfing in 2015. This resulted in Owen having to re-learn to talk, walk and surf again."

"His eventual return to competition was in 2017 when Wright won the season opener at Snapper Rocks during an emotionally charged comeback. He has finished both the 2017 and 2018 seasons at No. 6 on the World Surf League Jeep Leaderboard."

"Currently for the 2019 year Owen is ranked 7th in the world and is doing the Shoalhaven proud."

"What an inspirational person you are Owen and congratulations." Clr Findley said.

Shoalhaven City Council is looking forward to hearing of Owen's continued success on the international surfing stage, with the Billabong Pipe Masters still to be run in the coming months.
