Curtin Malaysia is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, with a new joint venture agreement between Curtin University and Curtin Malaysia Sdn Bhd having recently been signed to continue the partnership for a further 20 years.
To mark the special occasion, a series of new scholarships to support students from low socio-economic backgrounds to attend university have also been announced.
Established in 1999 in collaboration with the Sarawak State Government, Curtin Malaysia is Curtin's largest international campus and a central education and research hub for students across the Asian region.
Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said she was delighted to be marking the significant milestone with special celebrations in Malaysia that will include a formal stakeholder event, engagement with staff, two graduation ceremonies and an industry prize-giving event.
"For the last two decades, Curtin Malaysia has delivered quality education to thousands of students across the region and become an important part of Curtin's international footprint spanning Australia, Singapore, Dubai and Mauritius," Professor Terry said.
"The extension of this collaboration for another 20 years reaffirms our commitment to further strengthen Australia-Malaysia ties, ensuring Curtin Malaysia continues to support the University to achieve its global objectives."
Curtin Malaysia is a partnership between Curtin University and a specially formed company, Curtin Malaysia Sdn Bhd, whose shareholders are Sarawak State Government instrumentalities and local Sarawak business people. The new joint venture agreement was signed by Professor Terry and Chairman of Curtin Malaysia Sdn Bhd Datu Ose Murang.
Curtin Malaysia Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski said the anniversary scholarships would support high-achieving students from low socio-economic backgrounds to gain a tertiary education.
"As part of our 20-year anniversary celebrations, Curtin Malaysia has launched a special category of scholarships for the University's foundation programs and selected undergraduate programs," Professor Mienczakowski said.
"These scholarships will support talented students from the region to fulfil their aspirations to further their education and serve as a sign of gratitude for Malaysia's support for Curtin over the past two decades."
Curtin Malaysia was Curtin University's first international campus when it opened in 1999, followed by the opening of Curtin Singapore in 2008, Curtin Dubai in 2017 and Curtin Mauritius in 2018.
Located in Miri, Curtin Malaysia offers a unique cross-cultural learning experience with students from more than 50 different countries and teaching staff from more than 15 countries.
Its courses, which are the same as those offered at Curtin's campus located in Perth, Western Australia, include undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering and science, business and humanities, and pre-university foundation and intensive English courses. It also has a very active research community geared to serving the needs of industry and society in Sarawak.
